Visit Rokeby Museum and discover a National Historic Landmark that the National Park Service describes as “unrivaled” and that connects visitors with the human experience of the underground railroad. A stunning new exhibit – Free & Safe: The Underground Railroad in Vermont – introduces visitors to Simon and Jesse, two fugitives from slavery who were sheltered at the site in the 1830s. Free & Safe traces their stories from slavery to freedom, introduces the abolitionist Robinson family who called Rokeby home for nearly 200 years, and explores the turbulent decades leading up to the Civil War.

The Federal style home, fully furnished with 200 years of personal belongings, evokes the family’s domestic life and taste, social and religious beliefs, and literary and artistic talents through four generations. Once a thriving Merino sheep farm, Rokeby also retains eight historic farm buildings filled with period artifacts. Old wells, stone walls, orchards and fields recall Vermont’s agricultural past. Acres of former farmland invite a leisurely stroll around the pastoral grounds or a hike up the trail. Picnic tables welcome visitor to enjoy lunch outdoors.

Rokeby is open from mid May to the last Sunday in October. You may visit the exhibit, grounds, and outbuildings daily from 10 to 5; guided tours of the house are offered Friday through Monday at 11:00 and 2:00. Group tours are welcome, please call or e-mail to make a reservation. Admission is $10 for adults, $9 for seniors and groups (15 minimum), $8 for students; children younger than 5 are admitted free.
